Certain breeds have a reputation itchy. These include West Highland White Terrier, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd.
There are many old wives’ tale about the care of our dogs. Is this just another, or certain breeds are much more itchy than others?
Breed Specific skin problems
There is definitely skin problems in a race much more than others. In many cases there is a genetic component of these problems, why they are often relevant in the race, and not other states.
An example is epidermal dysplasia in West Highland White Terrier. The term ‘dysplasia’ means abnormal growth. This condition is due to an abnormal development of skin cells, leading to inflammation and secondary infections with Malassezia yeast. The result is hair loss and constant itching and scratching, which at first glance appears to 12-18 months old. This is a frustrating condition – treatment of the infection often cause itching, but because the underlying problem of skin cells, is returned so soon stopped the medication. There are other specific skin diseases that occur in other breeds, and many of them are also suspected to be hereditary.
Are allergies hereditary?
Since the majority of the problems caused by intense itching allergic reactions, it is useful to see if any more races than any other allergy.
The most common allergy in dogs is flea bite allergy. Dogs with this problem may itch for several weeks if they have just been bitten by a flea bite and scratch and they can be sore. When the researchers could determine, there is no racial predilection for flea allergy.
The situation recalls the Food Allergies – There are no breeds that are particularly prone to develop this condition.
However, there are a lot of evidence that atopy (or allergic to dust and pollen) are more common in certain breeds than others, suggesting that it may be hereditary. Indeed, atopy is more common in certain lines within those breeds.
Just to complicate things, some studies suggest that atopic dogs tend to have allergic flea bite. So if that is the case, then we recommend that it is a hereditary component to flea allergy dermatitis in reality? Veterinarians are that it is not yet in doubt.
Managing Your Itchy Breed
Depending on the breed of dog you own, and that the potentially hereditary skin disease to do so, your vet to alleviate some medication for his itching.
In the meantime, there are steps you can take to manage his condition.
1st Wash him in the Comfy Dog Shampoo. It contains colloidal oatmeal, known for itching relief. It also contains herbal extracts to reduce inflammation and relieve red, irritated skin. If you can coat the shampoo with butter, your dog will be easier for more.
2nd Make sure that he will never be bitten by a flea. If he has an underlying atopy, it is probably more sensitive to fleas. This makes it more important that you keep these little critters. If you regularly apply flea the scene, he is no longer bothered by fleas.
